NATIONAL DIRECTORY FOR THE MINISTRY, FORMATION AND LIFE OF PERMANENT DEACONS IN CANADA

Issued with the canonical approval of the Latin Rite Bishops of Canada and the recognitio of the Congregation for Clergy, this Directory co-ordinates, updates and supplements the information and guidelines previously provided by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops on permanent deacons in Canada, and replaces its earlier Decree No. 27 on the formation of permanent deacons, taking into account new situations and needs. Its purpose is to provide guidance in the formation, ministry, and life of permanent deacons as well as basic standards for the coordination and updating of diaconate programs and policies at the local level. Prescriptive in Canada as of 10 August 2017 (the Feast of Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr) for Latin Rite dioceses and those responsible for permanent diaconate programs in the Latin Church, the Directory will also be a necessary resource for all permanent deacons ordained in the Latin Rite and those Latin Rite clerical institutes of consecrated life which have permanent deacons. Moreover, it is the hope of the Conference that this Directory may likewise be useful for the Eparchies of the Eastern Churches present in the country.
